The Hermitage: Frontier Farm to American Landmark looks at how this 1,000-acre property evolved from a modest frontier farm to Andrew Jackson's prosperous and expansive cotton plantation. The exhibit also illustrates how after Jackson's death, The Hermitage became an American Landmark while simultaneously deteriorating due to the Jackson family's downward financial situation.

The Hermitage story is not just about Andrew Jackson and his family. In fact, the Jackson family story cannot be told without the stories of the 150 enslaved Africans who lived and worked at The Hermitage. Whether house slave, skilled craftsmen, or field hand, each and every one made an important contribution to The Hermitage. From 1804 to 1865, slaves were born, purchased, lived, sold, and died on The Hermitage, but little is known about their story. Only recently through scant documents, archaeology, and oral tradition has an image of the Hermitage slave community begun to emerge.

The Hermitage, Home of President Andrew Jackson is proud to present Stories from the Hermitage Slave Community. Funds provided by the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority helped make this exhibit possible.

Only a small number of photographs of Hermitage slaves are known to exist. This temporary exhibit gives voice to the Hermitage Slave Community by combining images of the slaves weathered and worn hands and faces with personal information about them. These stories and images reflect the struggle and contributions of individuals and families who supported the Hermitage plantation and the Jackson family.

Stories from the Hermitage Slave Community runs indefinitely. Stories from the Hermitage Slave Community is included with regular admission to The Hermitage.

Prehistoric Indian cultures existed in Tennessee through four evolving periods, beginning about 15,000 years ago, peaking between 800 and 1650 A.D. with the Mississippian people, and ending with the ascendancy of such modern tribes as the Cherokee and Chickasaw.

Artifacts from the Paleolithic, Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippian periods are on exhibit. The museum even has a display of bones from a mastodon that roamed Tennessee 10,000 years ago.

Spanish conquistadors were the first Europeans to reach Tennessee, followed by the French and English explorers, and then by the first white settlers. Armor and weapons from the Europeans and Daniel Boone's musket highlight this era.

A frontier cabin, 200-year-old dugout canoe, a grist mill, and a Conestoga wagon all give testimony to life on the frontier. Handmade furniture, a woodworking shop, and a working printing press show the skill of early Tennessee craftspeople.

The Antebellum period of 1840 to 1860 was a time of prosperity and cultural development for many Tennesseans. (Antebellum is from the Latin words ante, before, and bellum, war. It is used to signify the period before the Civil War.)

Cities and towns became trade centers, as railroads and steamboats drew people closer together. The increasing prosperity manifested itself in several ways. Artists, whether trained or self-taught, found a ready market for their skills as the rising middle and upper classes sought to have their portraits painted. Silversmiths, gunsmiths, tailors, and other craftsmen established themselves in cities and towns. Exhibits of Tennessee-made silver, firearms, and quilts attest to that prosperity.

Another display on African American life points out that one-fourth of Tennessee's population were blacks who not only did not share in the state's prosperity but also lived as slaves unable to control their own lives.

By 1860 the issue of slavery had become a tinderbox; a moral, social and economic issue which slowly divided the northern and southern states. Tennessee found itself divided when the General Assembly voted to secede. Many people in East Tennessee supported the Union and even fought in the Union Army.

Tennessee was the primary battlefield of the Civil War in the west, with more than 400 battles and skirmishes within its borders. Each of the major battles in Tennessee is highlighted with artifacts from the battlefield. The Tennessee State Museum's holdings of uniforms, battle flags and weapons are among the best in the nation.

To learn about the people and places in The Widow of the South book, we offer, in conjunction with Carnton Plantation, a joint Widow of the South tour. The tour includes the 90-minute walking tour of downtown Franklin and an hour-long guided house tour of Carnton Plantation in one combined price. For the Carnton portion of the tour, a reservation is not required. Simply visit Carnton during its regular hours. Please note: The last tour of the day is at 4:00pm at Carnton. For the downtown portion of the tour, call us at 615-400-3808 for a reservation and time for your tour.

The Widow of the South, written by long-time Franklin resident and Historic Carnton Plantation Association board member Robert Hicks, centers on the life of Carrie McGavock, the mistress of Carnton before, during and after the Civil War. After the hardcover release in September, 2005, the book rose to #5 and spent eight weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list in the fall of 2005. Now in paperback and published in French, Spanish, Arabic and Mandarin, the book gives readers an understanding of the historical significance of the Battle of Franklin, described by National Geographic as "the most unjustly forgotten battle of the entire Civil War." (April, 2005)

I Spy Downtown Franklin can best be described as a scavenger hunt for the eyes. Children who participate in I Spy count objects and find dates, make a brass rubbing, learn about and draw historical doors, look for architectural details on buildings around the Square and down Main Street, and have fun!. It's an active, hands-on program that takes about an hour.

I Spy is great for kids who are at least beginning to read (usually ages 5 - 6) through about age 10 or 11. Children who do not yet recognize letters and numbers generally do not find the program engaging.

Helpful Information: Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. I Spy is available by arrangement for groups of 6 or more. Think scout outing, birthday party, or neighborhood event. Give us a call to schedule your tour.

Honoring the life and work of renowned carver Tim Lewis from Kentucky. Lewis is one of America’s premier living self-taught artists. After debuting at Customs House, selections from the exhibit will travel to the Columbus Museum of Art (Columbus, Ohio) and Mennello Museum American Art (Orlando, Florida) before closing the tour at the Kentucky Folk Art Center at Morehead State University.

Sixty pieces of Lewis’s work have been gathered from twenty-two public and private collections from across the Southeast and Midwest by guest curators Bruce and Kathy Moses Shelton. Works exemplify the full range of Lewis’s ability to tell a story from his first Noah’s Ark to his most recent – Win, Place & Show, an homage to the Kentucky Derby. Mining the experience of family and home, as well as a trove of legends and beliefs accumulated over a lifetime, Lewis has created a body of work that emerges as a visual narrative rich in its ‘telling.’

Carvings by Lewis have been included in exhibitions around the country and are in dozens of public and private collections including those of The Huntington (WV) Museum, High Museum of Art (Atlanta) and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. United States Senator Lamar Alexander and his wife Honey, and contemporary artist Red Grooms and his wife Lysiane Grooms have also acquired examples of Lewis’s stone carving. In October of 2007, Lewis was proclaimed “Artist of the Year” by the Folk Art Society of America.

Accompanying the exhibit are a locally-produced full-color catalogue and short film produced by Daniel Price, Director of the Institute of Self-Taught Artist Resources.

Helpful Information: Children under age 14 must be accompanied by an adult at all times and in all areas of the Museum. Free parking for Museum visitors is available behind the Museum at the top of the hill off South Second Street. Sundays are free for everyone!

See the show that made country music famous.

Have a holly, jolly, 19th-century Christmas with Nashville Zoo!

To celebrate the season, the Zoo's Historic Home will be decorated with greenery, ribbon, and vintage decorations that belonged to Margaret and Elise Croft, former tenants of the Grassmere property whose family owned the land and home for five generations.

Yuletide tours will be offered at the Home the first three weekends in December (6-7, 13-14, 20-21). The tour showcases a traditional Victorian Christmas and explores some of the time's customs that we still honor today. Tours will start daily at 10:00am and run on the half hour, with the last tour starting at 3:00pm.

Tours of the Home are included with Zoo admission. To take the tour, guests are asked to assemble on the front porch of the Historic Home where the tour guide will meet them.

See the show that made country music famous. The unique art form we call country music owes its phenomenal rise in popularity to a live show that began more than 80 years ago called the Grand Ole Opry. The tradition is stronger than ever today, as several times a week the Opry presents a live show with an ever-changing mix of famous and soon-to-be-famous talent sharing the stage. At the Opry, you can count on things happening you just can't see anywhere else.

Scheduled to perform on Friday 10/31 are: Cherryholmes and more performers to be announced.

Schedule Changes: The lineup for each Grand Ole Opry show is not completely finished until just a few days before the show, so it is not possible to post the schedule far in advance. Artists are posted to the Opry website as soon as appearances are confirmed (artists and schedule subject to change). Plan to check back often, as most times artists' appearances are not confirmed until one to two weeks prior to the show date (or even a day before.)

The Tennessee Theater Company is celebrating its 10th anniversary of the popular local theatrical production "The Bell Witch Story," with the shows return October 9th through the 31st. "The Bell Witch Story" is a supernatural thriller based on actual events that took place in Adams, Tenn. from 1817 to 1821, in which a spirit tormented John Bell and his family, leaving him in a terrifying fight against the vengeful ghost to save his children and his own life. The infamous haunting is the only known case where a spirit actually took credit for killing someone; and is the only haunting acknowledged in any US state records. The play is based on eyewitness accounts from Richard Bell's manuscript "Our Family Trouble" and Charles Bailey Bell's book "The Bell Witch of Tennessee", as experienced by hundreds of people including Andrew Jackson.

PLEASE NOTE: The performances will be at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds in Nashville (October 9th, 10th, 11th, 16th, 17th and 18th); the Wilson County Fairgrounds in Lebanon (October 23rd, 24th and 25th); and Patterson Theatre in Murfreesboro (October 29th, 30th and 31st).
