Since Cheekwood was founded, the museum has amassed an excellent collection of twentieth-century works on paper. The exhibition surveys the result of many wonderful gift purchases for the permanent collection. While works by many of the most recognized twentieth-century masters are included, it also provides excellent examples of prints, drawings, and watercolors by either lesser-known or regionally recognized artists. Works range from American Realists such as Reginald March and Isabel Bishop to early Modernist like John Marin and Stuart Davis to Edward Ruscha and David Hockney.

The 2008 Annual International Black Film Festival of Nashville presents Southern Style "Feels Like Home." What comes to mind when you think of the comforts of home? In the South for many it is hanging out on the front porch in a rocking chair with a glass of sweet tea waving at your friends as they go by. It is walking through your neighborhood sharing colorful stories and organizing impromptu barbeques on the weekend. It is meeting new acquaintances that eventually become lifelong friends after only a few days.

The International Black Film Festival of Nashville has that same warm, sharing, welcoming feeling. With Nashville dubbed, “Music City USA”, it proudly boasts rolling hills, mild climate, diverse population, robust economy, and an exploding international business community...setting the stage for a global celebration! But we promise... to always make it feel like home. Numerous screenings, special events, celebrity forums, workshops and panels will be held throughout the four-day festival. Screenings will be held at the Historic Belcourt Theatre in midtown.

IBFF is now accepting submissions until July 31, 2008 and is dedicated to discovering emerging filmmakers and promoting their work. All official IBFF film selections receive tremendous exposure, reaching the festivals broad audience that attracts representatives from distribution companies and leading industry film executives. After screening at IBFF, a number of films have received international recognition and distribution offers.

IBFF is open to independently produced national and international films in the following genres: Short Narrative, Feature Narrative, Documentary Long/Short and Animation. Also accepting faith-based, health & environment and sports-related films. Fill out the entry form and submit your film.

Ken Burns has been making documentary films for more than 30 years. Since the Academy Award-nominated Brooklyn Bridge in 1981, he has gone on to direct and produce some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made. Stephen Ambrose, the historian, has said of Burns’ films, "More Americans get their history form Ken Burns than any other source."

On September 30, Burns will address his approach to "history" and his perspective on the American experience and the following day will answer question from students in a Q-and-A session.

Bring your favorite chair of blanket. October 11 at 6:16pm -- Cat-Women of the Moon and Freaks.

Cat-Women of the Moon -- They're fiery...fearless...ferocious! Five astronauts travel to the dark side of the moon on a scientific expedition. There they discover a cave which somehow retains a breathable atmosphere. They remove their space suits and venture on. After an encounter with two giant spiders, they discover their space suits have been stolen from where they left them. Forced to carry on into the cave, they soon find a city where the last members of a centuries old civilization greet them with food and drink. Little do they know that these lovely leotard-clad women led by Alpha (Carol Brewster) are using mind control on the ship's Navigator. Their plan is to use the navigator, (and their own feminine wiles) to gain enough knowledge to steal the ship, travel to Earth and gain control of all the women there. Complicating things is the love triangle between the ship Captain, Laird Grainger (Sonny Tufts), Kip Reissner, (Victor Jory) and Helen. Dir. Arthur Hilton, 1953, USA, 64 min.

Freaks -- "We'll Make Her One of Us!" from the gibbering mouths of these weird creatures came this frenzied cry... no wonder she cringed in horror... this beautiful woman who dared toy with the love of one of them! In a side-show circus, where the greatest attractions are deformed people, the gorgeous trapeze artist Cleopatra (Olga Baclanova) is the lover of the strong Hercules (Henry Victor). She plays as if she liked the German midget Hans (Harry Earles), who is in love with her, to borrow his money and get expensive gifts he gives to her. When the jealous German midget Frieda (Daisy Earles), who loves Hans, asks Cleopatra to spare Hans from a great deception, she accidentally discloses that he is an heir of a great fortune. Cleo decides to get married with Hans to poison him and get his inheritance. In the wedding feast, Cleopatra openly flirts with Hercules and mocks the side-show performers. When a very ill Hans is saved by a doctor that tells that he has been cruelly poisoned, the other freaks snoops in Hans trailer and they find what Cleopatra is doing with him. In a stormy night, all the freaks join forces and transform Cleopatra in the Feathered Hen. Dir. Tod Browning, 1932, USA, 64 min.

Jennifer Steinkamp American (b. Denver, Colorado 1958) Miss Znerold, 2005 DVD Projection Collection of Gigi and Carl Grimstad, Nashville One of today's leading practitioners of new media art, the Los Angeles-based artist Jennifer Steinkamp creates projections in which animated fields of colorful shapes ripple and undulate in patterns that translate the sensation of phenomena such as wind, waves, and light into visually intoxicating, vertigo-inducing environments. The artist considers her work to be a means of integrating painting, video, and installation art to induce "a physical state of pleasure."

Miss Znerold is one of several computer animations she has produced showing trees in a lyrically transformative sequence of shapes and colors. In this work, branches alternately lift up and droop down, indicating that the tree is either moving in response to the wind, or engaging in a rhythmic passage of tension and relaxation. The leaves' rapidly changing colors suggest that seasonal transitions are occurring over a period of minutes rather than months. The title honors Steinkamp's first-grade teacher, who once congratulated her for making the best sponge trees in the entire class.

Actor/Filmmaker Crispin Glover has formed a unique approach to exhibiting his "IT" trilogy. Rather than go the traditional route of seeking distribution from a third-party company and releasing his films on DVD some months later, Mr. Glover has developed a full evening program for his audience complete with a slideshow/performance, a film viewing followed by a Q&A, and a book signing session. These films can only be seen with a live audience and are not available on DVD. Join him at the Belcourt for Crispin Hellion Glover's Big Slide Show featuring his new film, WHAT IS IT?

The Last Mistress (Une Vieille Maitresse) marks the monumental pairing of cinema's premiere provocateur, director Catherine Breillat (Romance, Fat Girl) with the most fearless and explosive actor of our generation, Asia Argento (Marie Antoniette, Boarding Gate). A penniless rogue, Ryno de Marigny (newcomer Fu-ad At Aattou), shocks 19th century France with his engagement to the virginal gem of the aristocracy, Hermangarde (Roxane Mesquida of Fat Girl). As lurid speculations of Ryno's ten year affair with the carnal Vellini (Argento) manifest, a supremely erotic and wickedly humorous depiction of human lust is revealed - overriding the brittle facade of nobility and reverence. Bolstered by Breillat's mastery of the medium and Argento's commanding performance, The Last Mistress is a highly entertaining yet incredibly provocative film that has resulted in unanimous praise from audiences and critics across the world. Dir. Catherine Breillat, France, 2008, 104 min, Unrated.

Award-winning Spokane/Coeur d'Alene author Sherman Alexie and noted Los Angeles director Charles Burnett (Killer of Sheep) present Kent Mackenzie's remarkable 1961 debut feature The Exiles. The Exiles chronicles one night in the lives of young Native American men and women living in the Bunker Hill district of Los Angeles. Based entirely on interviews with the participants and their friends, the film follows a group of exiles "transplants from Southwest reservations" as they flirt, drink, party, fight, and dance. Filmmaker Kent Mackenzie first conceived of The Exiles during the making of his short film Bunker Hill--1956 while a student at the University of Southern California. In July 1957, Mackenzie began to hang around with some of the young Indians in downtown Los Angeles. After a couple of months, he broached the subject of making a film that would present a realistic portrayal of Indian life in the community. Mackenzie spent long hours making friends and earning the confidence of these Indians who finally agreed to re-enact a scenes from their lives for this picture. All of the actors, some of whom were recruited on the spur of the moment during the shooting, play themselves in the film. The Exiles was directed and photographed by a group of young filmmakers -- Mackenzie's college mates, fellow employees, and friends holding down a variety of day-to-day jobs in the motion picture industry. Much of the picture was shot on "short ends," the leftovers of 1,000-foot rolls (varying from 100 to 300 feet of stock) discarded by major film producers. In collaboration with cinematographers John Morrill, Erik Daarstad, and Robert Kaufman, the shooting of The Exiles began in January 1958 and the first trial composite print was privately screened in April 1961. Premiering in the Venice Film Festival that year, the film received acclaim from many critics but tragically never found commercial distribution. It was Thom Andersen's compilation documentary Los Angeles Plays Itself which kicked off the rediscovery of this lost masterwork. Andersen contacted the daughters of Mackenzie to receive permission to use footage to illustrate the lost neighborhood of Bunker Hill. Although the original negative and fine-grain (interpositive) existed for the film, it was decided that a theatrical distribution of the film could put the materials at risk. So Milestone, in cooperation with USC's film archivist Valarie Schwan, brought the film to preservationist Ross Lipman and the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Milestone who distributed last year's critical and box office hit, Charles Burnett's Killer of Sheep, is releasing the restored version of The Exiles.

Love Lived on Death Row is presented at the Belcourt by the Tennessee Coalition To Abolish State Killing. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with director Linda Booker.

Love Lived on Death Row tells the story of the four Syriani siblings whose father was sentenced to die for the murder of their mother in 1990 and Meg Eggleston who became their father's friend and spiritual advisor through letters to him in prison. Orphaned and estranged, the Syriani children lived with hate, anger and confusion as the man they could only refer to as 'Him Him' lived on North Carolina's death row. But in 2004 they collectively decided to visit him in prison, seeking answers so they could move on with their adult lives. What transpired that day was a miracle of forgiveness followed by a journey of healing, restoring family memories and then a battle for his clemency. Love Lived on Death Row's portrait of a family torn apart by tragedy and reunited by another impending tragedy is a powerful examination of not only the healing process, but also of the role capital punishment plays in serving justice.

“I got a song here that I’d like to do that’s been awful kind to me and the boys, financially,” said Hank Williams, introducing “Cold, Cold Heart” on the Kate Smith Evening Hour on April 23, 1952.

"It’s bought us quite a few beans and biscuits.” Twice that year, Kate Smith hosted stars from the Grand Ole Opry on her NBC prime-time television show. Williams appeared on both broadcasts, months before his untimely death. These programs are revered since they include some of Williams’s only known performance footage. In honor of the anniversary of Hank Williams’s birth on this day in 1923, the museum will show both shows continuously in the Ford Theater. Also included are performances by Roy Acuff & the Smoky Mountain Boys, Mother Maybelle Carter & the Carter Sisters, Lonzo & Oscar, and others. From the museum’s Frist Library and Archive. Total loop time is 60 minutes.

"Praying With Lior" is documentary film about Lior Liebling, a young man with Down syndrome, who is approaching Bar Mitzvah. While everyone agrees Lior is closer to God than most, he's also a burden, a best friend, an inspiration, and an embarrassment -depending on which family member is speaking. The film poses difficult questions such as "what is disability?" and "who really talks to God?" It is the centerpiece of an ambitious outreach campaign to change the way people with disabilities are perceived and received by faith communities. A panel discussion will follow the film.

The Belcourt Theatre presents an abridged celluloid survey of the homeless person, an indispensable character to 95 years of cinema. All dates below are confirmed, exact showtimes will be announced soon on the Belcourt website.

CHAPLIN SHORTS: 1914-1917 Sunday, Sept. 14
Police - The criminal element is introduced to the Tramp’s character (1916, 25min)
The Vagabond - A street musician rescues a kidnapped gypsy girl (1916, 22min)
(1918, 40min)

BOUDU SAVED FROM DROWNING (1931) Sun-Mon, Sept. 14-15
Michel Simon gives one of the most memorable performances in screen history as Boudu, a Parisian tramp rescued from a suicidal plunge into the Seine by a well-to-do bookseller who decides to take him in. Boudu shows his gratitude by shaking the household to its foundations. Legendary director Jean Renoir (THE RULES OF THE GAME) takes advantage of a host of Parisian locations and the anarchic charms of his lead actor to create an effervescent satire of the bourgeoisie. Dir. Jean Renoir, 1931, France, 85min -- unavailable in 35mm - presented in a rare 16mm archival print

THE GRAPES OF WRATH (1940) Mon-Tue, Sept. 15-16
Based on the John Steinbeck novel and filmed only a year after its publication in a time of limited equipment, the film turns dust to gold in the hands of the prolific director John Ford. Tom Joad returns to his home after a jail sentence to find his family kicked out of their farm due to foreclosure amid the dustbowl era of the Great Depression. Dir. John Ford, 1940, USA, 128min -- unavailable in 35mm - presented in 16mm

SULLIVAN’S TRAVELS (1941) Tue-Thu, Sept. 16-18
This is both a filmmaker’s film and film for the masses, and that’s the point. Director John L. Sullivan wants to make a social-problems film, portentously called 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?'. When his producers point out that he knows nothing about trouble or poverty, he goes on the road as a hobo. Dir. Preston Sturges, 1941, USA, 90min – 35mm is believed to have perished in the Universal Pictures fire. Presented in 16mm

MIRACLE IN MILAN (1951) Wed-Thu, Sept. 17-18
In this fairytale film presentation by neo-realist, Italian director Vittorio de Sica (UMBERTO D, THE BICYCLE THIEF), young Toto, released from an orphanage at age 18, and the homeless squatters who have taken to his contagious exuberance strike oil while rebuilding their camp. When the landowner tries to claim the oil for himself, they receive help from an unlikely person from Toto’s past. Dir. Vittorio de Sica, 1951, Italy, 95min – unavailable in 35mm - presented in 16mm

THAT TENNESSEE BEAT (1966) Fri-Sat, Sept. 19-20
The local “B” movie salute to down-and-out songwriters on the streets of Nashville, this film features a homeless songwriter (Earl “Snake” Richards) who gets kicked out of his home by his father (Merle Travis) and saved by a wheelchair-bound preacher (Minnie Pearl). Also look for performances by Boots Randolph, Pete Drake and The Statler Brothers. Dir. Richard Brill, 1966, Nashville, 84min – unavailable in 35mm - presented in 16mm

MIDNIGHT COWBOY (1969) Fri-Sun, Sept. 19-21
United Artists 90th Anniversary new 35mm print!! Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman turn in pivotal performances in this groundbreaking character study of a lost Texas cowboy turned gigolo (Voight) and a sickly squatter (Hoffman). Dir. John Schlesinger, 1969, USA, 113min

BOUND FOR GLORY (1976) Sun-Tue, Sept. 21-23
Hal Ashby's film of Woody Guthrie's autobiography recounts the hobo-turned-folkie (David Carradine) who leaves family in 1930s Dust-Bowl-era Texas to, like thousands of others, ride the rails to California. Along the way he begins write songs which would attract him a following with the oppressed people about whose lives he sings, but curries no favor from the establishment. The award-winning cinematography by Haskell Wexler captures both the bleakness of the Great Depression and the beautiful grandeur of America of which Guthrie sings. Dir. Hal Ashby, 1976, USA, 146min, 35mm

VAGABOND (Sans toit ni loi, 1985) Mon-Wed, Sept. 22-24
Sandrine Bonnaire won the Best Actress César for her portrayal of the defiant young drifter Mona, found frozen to death in a ditch at the beginning of the film. Agnès Varda pieces together Mona’s story through flashbacks told by those who encountered her (played by a largely nonprofessional cast), producing a splintered portrait of an enigmatic woman. With its sparse, poetic imagery, VAGABOND (Sans toit ni loi) is a stunner, and won Varda the top prize at the Venice Film Festival. (Criterion Collection) Dir. Agnes Varda, 1985, France, 105min, 35mm

DARK DAYS (2000) Wed-Thu, Sept. 24-25
This documentary developed cult following on the strength of its subjects and 16MM B&W camera style, but depicts an almost unimaginable community living in rail tunnels under New York City. Director Marc Singer spent two years living among them and emerged with a genuine cinematic experience. Featuring a pulsing soundtrack by DJ Shadow. Dir. Marc Singer, 2000, USA, 94min, 35mm

AGILE, MOBILE, HOSTILE: A YEAR WITH ANDRE WILLIAMS (2008) Thu, Sept. 25
Andre Williams has written and recorded hit records and has worked with music industry legends, including Berry Gordy, Ike Turner and Stevie Wonder. Andre has also struggled throughout his life with addiction, poverty, homelessness and the legal system. Throughout his 72 years, Andre has never stopped driving his creative visions forward, regardless of cost or consequence. But during the course of a single year, these consequences turn out to be heartbreaking and severe as his addictive history catches up with him. The decisions he makes ultimately become a choice between life and death. (South by Southwest) Dir. Tricia Todd & Eric Matthies, 2008, USA, 86min, DIGITAL

CITY LIGHTS (1931) Fri-Mon, Sep 26-29
New 35mm restoral from Kino Int’l - In this tender comedy/drama the little tramp (Charlie Chaplin) tries to help a blind flower vender regain her sight. The tramp's friendship with a tipsy millioniare leads to a comic subplot of mistaken identity. Chaplin mixes slapstick and pathos with effortless brilliance. Dir. Charles Chaplin, 1931, USA, 87min, 35mm
