Prehistoric Indian cultures existed in Tennessee through four evolving periods, beginning about 15,000 years ago, peaking between 800 and 1650 A.D. with the Mississippian people, and ending with the ascendancy of such modern tribes as the Cherokee and Chickasaw.

Artifacts from the Paleolithic, Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippian periods are on exhibit. The museum even has a display of bones from a mastodon that roamed Tennessee 10,000 years ago.

Spanish conquistadors were the first Europeans to reach Tennessee, followed by the French and English explorers, and then by the first white settlers. Armor and weapons from the Europeans and Daniel Boone's musket highlight this era.

A frontier cabin, 200-year-old dugout canoe, a grist mill, and a Conestoga wagon all give testimony to life on the frontier. Handmade furniture, a woodworking shop, and a working printing press show the skill of early Tennessee craftspeople.

The Antebellum period of 1840 to 1860 was a time of prosperity and cultural development for many Tennesseans. (Antebellum is from the Latin words ante, before, and bellum, war. It is used to signify the period before the Civil War.)

Cities and towns became trade centers, as railroads and steamboats drew people closer together. The increasing prosperity manifested itself in several ways. Artists, whether trained or self-taught, found a ready market for their skills as the rising middle and upper classes sought to have their portraits painted. Silversmiths, gunsmiths, tailors, and other craftsmen established themselves in cities and towns. Exhibits of Tennessee-made silver, firearms, and quilts attest to that prosperity.

Another display on African American life points out that one-fourth of Tennessee's population were blacks who not only did not share in the state's prosperity but also lived as slaves unable to control their own lives.

By 1860 the issue of slavery had become a tinderbox; a moral, social and economic issue which slowly divided the northern and southern states. Tennessee found itself divided when the General Assembly voted to secede. Many people in East Tennessee supported the Union and even fought in the Union Army.

Tennessee was the primary battlefield of the Civil War in the west, with more than 400 battles and skirmishes within its borders. Each of the major battles in Tennessee is highlighted with artifacts from the battlefield. The Tennessee State Museum's holdings of uniforms, battle flags and weapons are among the best in the nation.

Between 1870 and the 1920's, Tennessee experienced great changes fueled by the post-Civil War industrial revolution. Exhibits on women's suffrage, Prohibition, and the Tennessee Centennial Exposition illustrate the state's involvement in social issues of the times.

After four years of rotation between Nashville and Memphis, the twenty-year-old Southern Festival of Books will return permanently to Nashville's War Memorial Plaza in 2008. The annual Southern Festival of Books: A Celebration of the Written Word features more than 200 authors from around the nation and in every genre for presentations, readings, panel discussions and book signings and draws nearly 30,000 patrons annually.

In addition to the many authors on the program the Festival hosts popular book exhibitors and programs three performance stages throughout the event. The cooking stage highlights talented chefs preparing and discussing recipes from the latest food and cookbooks. The Café Stage features music by some of the area's most talented musicians and poets. Special events for children are planned on the Children's Stage including appearances by favorite characters and birthday parties to celebrate the anniversaries of great children's books.

The Southern Festival of Books is presented by Humanities Tennessee, a non-profit organization that promotes humanities education across Tennessee.

There is no better way to spend a beautiful October day than at the Annual Oktoberfest Celebration in Historic Germantown. This colorful, autumn festival will again entertain, regale, and delight thousands from Middle Tennessee with its unique brand of traditional German revelry.

The day will begin at 9:30am when the two historic sponsoring churches will conduct community wide worship services. From 9:00am until 6:00pm, the Oktoberfest Street Festival kicks off with fun, food, fellowship, and entertainment. There will be a children's activity area featuring games, pony rides, face painting, clowns and snow cones. Enjoy live German music, four musical stages and street performances by Die Musik Meisters, Music City Swing, Steff Mahan Band and guests, Ted Guillaum (Organ Grinder) and more. Try your taste buds at authentic german food and beverages, as well as specialty home baked goods. Don't forget to check out all the arts and crafts booths, while strolling around the festival!

For more than a quarter century, this original, city wide celebration has been offering authentic German food, crafts, tours, dance, and entertainment. Established in 1980, this festival is one of the few nationwide that can claim an authentic German neighborhood as a venue. Oktoberfest showcases the best of this Germantown neighborhood - it's past history, present revitalization, and expanding future growth and diversity.

Helpful Information: The Oktoberfest Festival is held in Nashville's Historic Germantown. The event is located within a six-block area between the Tennessee Bicentennial Mall/Farmer's Market and Taylor Street, and between Fifth Avenue and Rosa L. Parks Boulevard. The two historic churches are on Seventh Avenue North and Monroe Street where the hub of the activities will occur. There is plenty of free parking available beside the festival site and at the Farmer's Market and Bicentennial Mall.

Dr. Stanley Hauerwas was named "America’s Best Theologian" by TIME magazine in 2001. Hauerwas will look at how a proper understanding of peace leads away from using violence to advance God’s work in the world. His work cuts across disciplinary lines, linking theology, ethics and political theory. His book, A Community of Character: Toward a Constructive Christian Social Ethic, was selected as one of the 100 most important books on religion of the 20th century. Hauwerwas' most recent book is The State of the University: Academic Knowledges and the Knowledge of God.

Barbara Bradley Hagerty, the religion correspondent for National Public Radio (NPR), will explore how the media reports – and misreports – the crucial interplay of faith and politics. At NPR, Hagerty reports on the intersection of faith and politics, law, science and culture, with stories ranging from the impeachment hearing of President Clinton to the Florida election to the DNA revolution. Hagerty was the lead correspondent covering the investigation into the September 11 attacks. Her reporting was part of NPR’s coverage that earned the network the 2001 George Foster Peabody and Overseas Press Club awards. She has appeared on the PBS programs Washington Week in Review and The Lehrer News Hour. In her capacity as religion correspondent, Hagerty received the 2004 Religion Newswriters Association award for radio reporting.

Shane Claiborne is the founder of The Simple Way. His new book, Jesus For President, was lauded by Publisher’s Weekly in a starred review as a "must-read election-year book for Christian Americans. What should Christians do when allegiances to the state clash with personal faith?" Claiborne will demonstrate how identification with those on the margins of society can challenge us to live in both personal and political solidarity with the poor.

Nationally known performance artist Sheryl Oring will be on the Belmont campus October 1-31 with her characteristic typewriter and camera. Oring performs via an interactive project with her audience – any Belmont student or personnel who may pass by. She sets up her table and typewriter and types postcards dictated by participants on what they wish to say to the future President. A photographer is there to document this "performance". Her "performances" have become both books and exhibits.
